Video: Ignition CORE alumni success stories
Applications are open for the Medical Device Commercialisation Training Program’s (MDCTP) flagship course, Ignition CORE – an initiative supported by The Warren Centre.
Ignition CORE is a 12-week course that provides medical technologists with a tailored curriculum on how to transform their visionary concepts into viable businesses. The program is run by world-leading incubator Cicada Innovations in partnership with NSW Health.
Candidates will participate in a range of workshops, events and be coached by over 30 mentors and domain experts leading the medtech industry covering topics including:
- Intellectual property
- Customer discovery
- Product development
- Regulatory and reimbursement strategy
- Financial modelling
- Valuation and capital raising
- Negotiation and influence
- Pitch crafting and communication
The course concludes with a Graduation Showcase with graduates pitching to over 300 investors, industry, government, media, research and university community members in the audience, and is attended by the NSW Minister for Health.
Non-dilutive funding in the form of grants and awards with a total value of $950,000 are available to graduates to further commercialise their technologies including:
- Two two-year International Scholarships to USA or Canada with access to mentors and office space to develop your business
- International Discovery Grants
- Product Development Award
- Intellectual Property Strategy Awards
- Regulatory Strategy Award
- Cicada Innovations Incubation Award
Extended support for graduates of Ignition CORE is available for up to five years through Cicada Innovations incubator with subsidised office and lab space, mentoring, pro-bono professional advice, exclusive events and access to Cicada Innovations’ community of over 70 companies.
Proven historical results
Since 2014, Ignition CORE has produced fifty graduates over 3 cohorts who have started 11 companies and have raised nearly $20m in public and private funding. Hear from some of the graduates who are now continuing to grow their companies at Cicada Innovations.
The course sets up candidates with a competitive edge to receive NSW Medical Device Fund grants. In 2017, $5.2m out of $6.6m was awarded to companies that graduated from Ignition CORE.
Cost and eligibility
All courses including Ignition CORE as part of the Medical Device Commercialisation Training Program are free for participants, through the generous support of NSW Health.
Applicants must own or have access to unique intellectual property to use during the course and must fall into one of the following categories:
- Physician; or
- Clinician (including Nurses and Allied Health Professionals); or
- Academic researcher; or
- Final-year PhD Candidate; or
- Masters’ Graduate; or
- Ignition Health Graduate.
Eligible applicants can come from startups, hospitals, health clinics, research institutes, universities, and the NSW Health System.
Applications are now open until 22 November 2017 with shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview in the week of 4-8 December. The course starts on 1 February 2018 and runs for 12 weeks every Thursday all day until 19 April 2018. Graduates will pitch at a Graduation Showcase in May 2018.
