About the event

Quantum computing is being hailed as the holy grail of 21st century computing and one of the greatest challenges in 21st century physics. Although the hurdles are significant, academia, industry and a small, but growing, community of start-ups are showing remarkable progress.

Australia is seen as a global powerhouse in research and development in quantum computing with early investments by IBM, Microsoft and Lockheed Martin. The opportunity for Australia to drive foreign investment home and build value domestically is real.

In the Beyond Binary panel, we aim to investigate the capability, opportunity and funding for and from quantum computing in Australia, and to celebrate the research and development success of our universities, industry partners and startups.

The panel will be moderated by Dr Joanna Batstone, VP and Lab Director for IBM Research Australia and Chief Technology Officer for IBM Australia & NZ. Panellists include:

  • Michael Biercuk, University of Sydney – Quantum physicist and Director of the Quantum Control Laboratory
  • Guilherme Tosi, University of New South Wales – Postdoctoral Research Associate
  • Hugh Harley, PwC – Financial Services Leader, Global Emerging Markets
  • Christopher Hess, Lockheed Martin – In-Country Manager, Global Supply Chain Program

The Beyond Binary event will be run in conjunction with the Spark Festival (Start-up Week Sydney) 2016, 24-28 October. The Spark Festival is a unique event that aims to connect people, ideas and resources across the start-up ecosystem. Last year 8,000 people attended 63 events in 39 venues across 10 technical tracks including Fintech, Health, IoT, Diversity and Government 2.0. This event will be run as part of the Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics track in the 2016 program.
