Olympics race: 5G on global stage

The 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics are not only a competition among the athletes.

From intelligent ice skating racing suits to an Intel 360-degree virtual reality viewer, Samsung, LG and Korea Telecom are using Korea’s games to showcase their amazing new technologies. The superstar breakthrough might be 5G wireless mobile broadband at about 100 times faster than 4G. 5G is not just for the Olympics. USyd Professor Branka Vucetic researches new commercial 5G wireless network applications. In the US, the future availability of 5G is deemed so critical that there is talk of nationalising the infrastructure (like NBN Co…really!?) to assure cyber security.

Meanwhile, roaming robots are greeting visitors arriving at Incheon Airport, and 4K and 8K UHD broadcasting will stream super fine images to television viewers.

Let the Games begin!
